So much is happening!

This month has flown by because we are so busy! We have made lots of contacts with classes all over the place via skype.  So far we have talked to two different classes in British Colombia, and there is some quad blogging happening with Mrs. Wideen's class blog with a class in Australia! After the spring break we are going to get a chance to talk to a class in Monterray Mexico!
In math we are working on number patterns up to fifty, so we are doing a lot of work estimating and grouping things together to help us count larger numbers.
On April 11, we have a field trip coming up to go to hear the Windsor Symphony Orchastra play at Essex high school.  More details will be coming home about this trip shortly.
After the break we are going to be talking a lot about Dr. Suess and his books.  This is one of my favourite authors.  There are a lot of fun things and surprises planned.
Keep reading and smiling!

Almost March? What? What happened to February?

We are so unbelievably busy, time is going so fast! We are busy working on our reading trying to bump up our reading levels. Parents, it is so important to keep up the reading or word cards at home. Any extra help we can give our little readers the further they will go.
In Math we are learning about 3D solids. Look for cubes, spheres, pyramids and prisms all around you. They're everywhere!

It's almost February?!?!

Time is going by sooo quickly! Christmas just past, then Right back into learning, and most recently Mrs. Wideen and I had the amazing opportunity to visit the Florida Educational Technology Conference. What an awesome experience! We had the chance to network face to face with literally thousands of educators from around the world to discuss the importance of helping our students become more "digitally literate". We are genuinely trying to expose our students to the technology that is going to be part of their everyday life. One of the ways we are doing this is through our show and share blogs. We truly appreciate all of you doing your best to support this at home. We understand that there are going to be hiccups (everyone knows technology isn't always perfect, but we believe our perseverance will pay off! As always if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.
On a final note, we are going to have to request that toys and collector cards stay at home. They are really becoming a distraction and source of conflict in the class, and we really don't want to jeopardize the climate of our class and the work that the kids are doing.
Thank you again for all of your help and support!

It's Crock-a-Doodle Day!

We were very excited today for Crock a Doodle to come to our class.  We got to paint something special for Christmas.  We can't wait to get them back to see what they look like after they are fired in the kiln!

50th Day

Dear Grade 1 Parents,

We want to make you aware of an upcoming special day for the grade ones.  On Tuesday November 15th, we will be celebrating the 50th day of school.  We are going ‘back in time’ to the 1950’s to help celebrate that day!  We will be
doing some fun activities  within our classrooms.  These activities will include,
using a 50’s grid to find number patterns, counting out 50 fruit loops to make a necklace, using a bar graph to record our favourite activities, a sock hop, teaching the kids some dance moves from the 50’s and enjoying music from that decade.  Afterwards, the students will get to cool-off with a float. It is
going to be a lot of fun!
To make it feel more authentic, we are asking for your help by having the students “dress” 50’s style.  Some ideas are: bobby socks, long skirts and pony tails tied with ribbons for the girls.  For the boys: white t-shirts, jeans rolled up and slicked hair.  Have fun being creative with this, but please don’t feel like you need to buy anything new!
We are really looking forward to this (you’ll see us in our poodle skirts too!) Let us know if you have any questions.
